About SE16

Transport

SE16 is served by four stations. Near the river Rotherhithe has been re-opened as a London Overground station in 2010 together with Surrey Quays to the south.  In between lays Canada Water, this is now an important transport interchange as it connects the London Overground (formerly East London line) and the Jubilee line.  The last station is Bermondsey, also on the Jubilee line.

Amenities

Surrey Quays Shopping Centre is the major attraction for shoppers. Nearby is the massive Decathlon Store and Odeon Cinema.  Albion Street, Lower Road, Jamaica Road and the nearby Southwark Park Road have a surprisingly wide collection of shops.

To the south of Bermondsey lays Old Kent Road, with large stores such as Tesco, Asda, Lidl, B&Q and Halfords.

Eating and drinking

Bermondsey Street is lined with trendy bars and Shad Thames hosts many Conran’s restaurants including Pont de la Tour, the Blueprint Cafe and the Butler's Wharf Chop House.

History

The area was a port from the 12th century or earlier until the 20th century.  With the arrival of the Jubilee line in 1999 (giving quick connections to the West End and to Canary Wharf) and the London Overground in 2010 (providing a quick route to the City of London), the area is now a rapidly gentrifying residential and commuter area.
